Zanzibar welcomes our newest addition to pottery:
Beautiful hand painted and stamped pottery from Poland. We will be
offering pitchers, creamers, tea sets, small dishes and bowls and an
ever-changing variety of this bold and beautiful pottery.
Boleslawiec (pronounced
bol-ES-slav-ik) Poland produces the finest in ceramic
dinnerware and accessories. The 600-year-old tradition lives on through
each piece, which is lovingly handcrafted. The unique stamp
technique, beautiful white clay and green, blue, earth tone glazes
adorning each piece have created a worldwide recognition of Polish
Pottery.
Our Boleslawiec pottery products are of the
highest quality, lead-free, microwave, oven, freezer, and dishwasher-safe.
Our heirloom-quality stoneware is non-porous, chip-resistant and easy to
clean! All Boleslawiec pottery is clearly marked with marks/stickers
that give a "Gat." rating. "Gat." is short for gatunek which means
"quality category." You'll find pots ranging from categories one through
five, however at Zanzibar we only sell Gat. 1 - the very highest/finest
quality (there aren't any defects in the pot whatsoever.)
Boleslawiec is a charming little town located in
the southwest of Poland about an hour (120 km) west of the city of
Wroclaw. Boleslawiec is on a river and was settled more than
750 years ago. There is a sweet town square with historical
buildings and churches, shops with ornaments, glass and linens, and even a
ceramics museum. In August, the town hosts a ceramics festival in the town
square.
The original design inspired by the peacock feather has endured
generations while simultaneously evolving to fit the current needs and
styles those buying the pottery. The patterns and colors are easily mixed
and matched for a uniquely fashionable table top display and due to the
double high firing technique each piece is microwave, oven, dishwasher and
freezer safe. It is non-toxic (lead free) and impervious to abrasives. So
the question is why not use this appealing combination of function and
beauty every day.
Some pots are "Unikat' which means they are
produced as a limited edition and are usually signed by the artist. These
are crafted by master artisans who've taken years and years to produce
designs that are repeated nearly flawlessly and perfect. These tend
to be more expensive, prized items which can be displayed or used as they
are as durable as regular Boleslawiec pottery.
TAKE CARE! While extremely utilitarian and
durable, Polish Pottery, like any stoneware, should not be taken directly
from the cold and placed in the oven. Allow to warm to room temperature
before heating. If proper precautions are not taken the pottery, like any
stoneware, may crack.
