Sugar Skull Making & Decorating Classes 2010 ALL CLASSES FOR 2009 ARE OVER WE WILL ANNOUNCE CLASSES IN SEPTEMBER FOR 2010
Zanzibar will offer multiple sugar skull classes in the fall of 2010. There will be TWO different kinds of classes offered. Free one hour decorating classes for children under 12 and our full two hour classes (all ages) on making & decorating sugar skulls (we do charge minimal material fees for these classes - see below). ALL CLASSES ARE HELD at our 1731 L Street Midtown Sacramento location upstairs in our private classroom. If you're interested in private classes for your group or school, limited dates are available - please contact Scott at (916) 443-5601 for availability and cost(s) -- (some will be done free while others either materials must be provided or a material fee paid).
Child Decorating Only Classes - FREE ALL BELOW DATES ARE FOR 2009
WE WILL ANNOUNCE 2010 DATES IN SEPTEMBER 2010
For children 12 & under. Kids will have chance to decorate one or more non-edible sugar skulls with icing, sequins, foil, feathers, specialty cut outs, googly-eyes and candy. There is no fee and classes and all materials are FREE and will be provided. There will NOT be a demonstration on how to make sugar skulls - this is a decorating only class. These classes will, weather permitting, be done outdoors under a tent, with tables & chairs at our Midtown location. If inclement weather, we will conduct the classes indoors. Adults must be present for children under 10 years of age. Parents can (space permitting), participate and help their children decorate their sugar skulls. If parents would like to decorate a sugar skull of their own with their children, a minimal materials fee may be charged.

attempt to update this website, however we kindly ask you to call to verify
availability and we ask that you not show up unannounced but that you make a

Two hour classes are offered at 10am, 1pm and 4pm (if first two classes fill). All materials provided, however there is a materials fee (see below). These classes will be in two parts: The first half will be demonstrating exactly how to make sugar skulls and the icing to decorate them (you get to make one and take it home for you to decorate later) and then you will actually get to decorate a pre-made sugar skull for the second half of the class.
These classes are great for everyone! If you just want to decorate a sugar skull without having to buy all the supplies, come to this class! If you want to learn how to make sugar skulls and have a party - come to this class! If you want to learn how to make sugar skulls and teach kids or others how to make them - come to this class! The class will feature lots of tricks and how-to's! Plus you can buy molds and supplies!

Due to the high demand in part because of some WONDERFUL promotions in the Sac Bee and on Good Day Sacramento, we've added the following classes: Please note: These classes are slightly different from the above - in that the FULL classes are making and decorating a medium (in place of a large skull) and the DECORATING ONLY classes are ONLY decorating a medium sugar skull - no instructions on making will be shown. SUNDAY NOV 1st, 10am - FULL 2 hour + Class - Cost is $10.00 per person, prepaid - SOLD OUT. this is a two plus hour classes showing you STEP-BY-STEP how to make a sugar skull (which you'll get to take home and decorate) and the second half of the class is DECORATING a pre-made sugar skull. SUNDAY NOV 1st, 1pm - Decorating only class - 1 hour (medium sugar skull - Cost is $5.00 per person, prepaid. SOLD OUT. this is a great class for kids or adults - you just spend an hour decorating a pre-made medium sugar skull that you get to take home. While we had free kids classes earlier, these have filled. SUNDAY NOV 1st, 2:30pm - Decorating only class - 1 hour (medium sugar skull - Cost is $5.00 per person, prepaid. SOLD OUT. this is a great class for kids or adults - you just spend an hour decorating a pre-made medium sugar skull that you get to take home. While we had free kids classes earlier, these have filled.
COST: There is a materials fee for these classes. COSTS FOR 2010 WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN SEPTEMBER 2010 Pre-made undecorated sugar skulls, colored frosting, foil and foil cut outs, sequins, feathers and assorted candy and other decorations will be provided. You will also receive a box to take your sugar skull home in.
While the above fees aren't even close to the actual cost of the materials, it is a token amount to offset our expenses. Last year we did offer free classes, however there was a tremendous amount of demand and it was at an expense of about $3,000 to us and we just can't justify that kind of expense under the current economic climate. We hope you understand. Also, last year without a fee, so many people flaked and simply didn't show up or didn't cancel and thus spaces went unfilled because of this. We do offer FREE decorating classes for kids on two days: Oct 10th and 31st. Clients MUST sign up for these classes and pay in advance. Sign ups require pre-payment. No refunds for cancellations (you can, space allowing, move to another date if you give 24 hour notice). We may call to remind you of your class date and time, however we encourage you to write it on your calendar!
