Sugar Skull Making & Decorating Classes 2012 in Sacramento, California CLASSES FOR OCTOBER 2012 October 5th, 2012: After long consideration, due to a variety of reasons WE WILL NOT BE OFFERING EITHER CHILDREN OR ADULT SUGAR SKULL DECORATING OR MAKING CLASSES THIS YEAR (2012) WITH APOLOGIES We do plan to offer them next year. We apologize for any inconvenience. Having just reopened and being behind schedule and frankly, not being able to afford the employee hours to offer the classes, we have opted not to offer them this year. WE STILL HAVE THE MOLDS & ALL THE SUPPLIES AND VERY DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS ON OUR WEBSITE HERE.
RESERVATIONS WILL BE TAKEN STARTING September 15th, 2013 (916) 443-5601 Zanzibar Trading will offer multiple sugar skull classes in the fall of 2013. There will be THREE different kinds of classes offered. FREE one hour decorating classes for children 12 & under (requires you to reserve space), Adult one hour decorating classes for a fee (fee depends on size of skull decorated) and our full two and a half hour classes (all ages) on making & decorating sugar skulls (we do charge minimal material fees for these classes - see below). 10 AM & 1 PM on Saturday, October 8, 15, 22, & 29th - 1 hour classes
10, 12 noon & 2pm on Sunday October 30th - 1 hour classes
For children 12 & Under. Older Siblings/Adults may help. If older siblings or adults wish to decorate a medium skull, there will be a flat $12 fee per person and MUST be included in reservation. Kids will have a chance to decorate one (1) non-edible medium (1 piece, flat backed) sugar skull with colored icing, sequins, foil, feathers, specialty cut outs, googly eyes and candy. There is NO FEE and all materials are included. Aprons will be provided, but we HIGHLY recommend children wear clothes that can get messy and show up 15 min before class.
Mark date on calendar, as we will NOT remind you, however we kindly request you contact us if you must cancel your reservation so that others may partake. Children will get to take the sugar skull home in a provided box. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. 3 PM on Saturday, October 8, 15, 22, & 29th - 2.5 hour class PREPAID ONLY
This is a full, two and a half hour long class that takes you step by step through the making of sugar skulls. If you're planning on making a lot of sugar skulls for a party or event or showing others how to make (ie a class of kids) this is the class for you!
All ages (over 10, please) This class will be essentially two parts. The first part we will give you a brief history of Day of the Dead and of Sugar Skulls and Offrenda (Altars) and you will learn the step-by-step of making sugar skulls and the frosting to decorate them. You will get to make a sugar skull. In the second portion of the class, pre-molded blank sugar skulls will be provided and each person will have a chance to decorate one (1) non-edible EITHER medium (1 piece, flat backed) sugar skull ($25 per person) OR a large (2 part, fully 3D softball sized skull - $35 per person) with colored icing, sequins, foil, feathers, specialty cut outs, googly eyes and candy. \ All materials are included. There is no fee and classes and all materials are FREE and will be provided. There will NOT be a demonstration on how to make sugar skulls - this is a decorating only class. These classes will, weather permitting, be done outdoors under a tent, with tables & chairs at our Midtown location. If inclement weather, we will conduct the classes indoors. Adults must be present for children under 10 years of age. Parents or older siblings can (space permitting), participate and help their children decorate their sugar skulls. If parents would like to decorate a sugar skull of their own with their children, a minimal materials fee will be charged for the skull(s) decorated by the adults.

Blank, ready to be decorated skulls will be provided. We will not be showing how to make sugar skulls nor will we be making sugar skulls. These classes are offered FOR A FEE. $12.00 for a medium, flat-backed skull and $20 for a full, 3-D softball sized skull. PREPAYMENT required upon making a reservation! reservations are on a first come, first booked basis. Please arrive 20 min early and be dressed to get messy. We will provide aprons. Classes are limited to 12 adults. We generally ask that this be an adult (13 years of age and up) class with no small children. If you want to decorate a sugar skull with a child under 13, we recommend you book (if space is available), one of our free children's classes and then you can pay a small fee to decorate a skull. Learn how to make sugar
skulls & decorating sugar skulls Classes for all ages
Two hour and 30 minute classes are offered at 3pm All materials provided, however there is a materials fee (see below). These classes will be in two parts: The first half will be include a brief history of Day of the Dead (dia de los Muertos) and ofrendas (altars) and then we will be demonstrating exactly how to make sugar skulls and the icing to decorate them (you get to make one and take it home for you to decorate later) and then you will actually get to decorate a pre-made sugar skull for the second half of the class. All materials are provided. Classes will be outside (weather permitting) under pop up tents with tables and chairs. Loaner aprons will be provided.
These classes are great for everyone! If you just want to decorate a sugar skull without having to buy all the supplies, come to this class! If you want to learn how to make sugar skulls and have a party - come to this class! If you want to learn how to make sugar skulls and teach kids or others how to make them - come to this class! If you want to JUST DECORATE and NOT LEARN the STEP-BY-STEP of making sugar skulls, we have those classes too! Free for kids under 14, minimal fee for adults. See above. The class will feature lots of tricks and how-to's! Plus you can buy molds and supplies! COST: There is a materials fee for these classes. To decorate a medium, flat backed sugar skull the cost if $25.00 per person for the class. To decorate a large (softball-sized) two part, fully 3D Skull, the cost is $35.00 per person for the class. MOST PEOPLE PREFER THE LARGE, 2-PART SKULLS. All materials will be provided along with aprons. We NEVER make a profit on these classes, we are simply trying to cover our expenses and employee costs.

You will also receive a box to take your sugar skull home in.
While the above fees aren't even close to the actual cost of the materials, it is a token amount to offset our expenses and to compensate our employees for their time. In 2008 we did offer free classes, however there was a tremendous amount of demand and it was at an expense of about $5,000 to us and we just can't justify that kind of expense under the current economic climate. We hope you understand. Also, in 2008 without a fee, so many people flaked and simply didn't show up or didn't cancel and thus spaces went unfilled because of this. We have slightly increased our materials fee cost over last year to come closer to covering our actual costs of doing these classes (they still operate at a loss). We do offer FREE decorating classes for kids on multiple days (see above) Clients MUST sign up for these classes and pay in advance. Sign ups require pre-payment. No refunds for cancellations (you can, space allowing, move to another date if you give 24 hour notice). We may call to remind you of your class date and time, however we encourage you to write it on your calendar!
